Dr. Strange 2016    9 out of 10

Marvel has hit it out of the park once again with Dr. Strange which introduces the MCU to the world of magic and opens the door for Marvel’s adventures to come. I absolutely loved Dr. Strange…..although it may be a little too weird for some.

Benedict Cumberbatch was excellent in the role of the arrogant Doctor with a photographic memory that becomes Dr. Strange. This character fits him well in the same way Sherlock Holmes fit him so perfectly on the BBC TV Series.  Dr. Strange gives us the origin story of this famous Marvel character.  Origin stories can drag a little at the start of a film—but Marvel has done a great job of making them interesting.

The Story

After a devastating car accident Dr. Strange goes from world class surgeon to struggling to use his hands.   He hits rock bottom before giving up on traditional medicine in search of some kind of miracle.  He ends up finding a lot more than he was searching for and becomes a  reluctant superhero is the process.

It is a wild and trippy film with imaginative visuals .  Some of the action sequences felt like they were straight out of an M.C. Escher painting which I absolutely loved.  The action sequences  were especially  cool.  One of my favorites  includes  Dr. Strange battling  his enemies in a mansion.  I really liked the ending since it gave us something different than what we are used to and provided some amazing visuals in the process.

If you are a fan of the MCU you will probably enjoy this film as well and the post credits scene sets up for  Dr. Strange’s next adventure as well.

(Spoilers Ahead)

In addition to adding Dr. Strange and the world of magic to the MCU this film also is another key to events to come in the next Avengers film.  Dr. Strange introduces us to yet another of the missing Infinity Stones  that we have seen throughout the Marvel films.   Only one Inifinity Stone is currently unaccounted for (My guess is we will see this in the next Thor film).   Marvel/Disney has done an amazing job of world building for the MCU.  They have made MCU movies must see events.  A couple of years ago I’d never even heard of some of these Marvel characters like Guardians of the Galaxy……now I can’t wait to see their next adventure and find out how it fits into the larger MCU.
